The usual minimum qualification required
is a 1st class four-year degree in a technical discipline
(i.e., a 1st class B.E., B.Tech, or equivalent), but people
holding 1st class Master's degrees in the mathematical sciences
(e.g. an M.Sc. in mathematics, physics, statistics, or electronics)
may also apply. An acceptable alternative qualification is
a first class Master’s degree in Education. However,
a sound academic background in science and mathematics would
be essential. Ordinarily, applications from candidates holding
Master's degrees in a technical discipline (i.e. an M.E.,
M.Tech, or equivalent) will be preferred, but candidates who
possess just the minimum qualification but show great aptitude
for research may be considered. Such candidates may sometimes
also be advised to pursue the M.S. by Research first, prior
to being accepted into the Ph.D. program.
The fellowship is offered initially for one year, and then
is renewable annually, for up to 3½ years, on satisfactory
performance. The candidate would receive a monthly stipend
of Rs.25,000. The fellowship will also cover expenses of presenting
