On Nov. 7, HP and Tsinghua University held the first annual Tsinghua-HP Multimedia Research Center Workshop in FIT building, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.
The workshop bears the name of the first joint lab between HP and Tsinghua, created in May, and is intended to become a yearly gathering to recognize and celebrate collaborative research.
More than 10 research scientists and R&D managers from HP Labs, IPG and TSG, and all related professors and students in Tsinghua University attended this workshop for face-to-face academic exchanges. The event began with a short introductory speech by Prof. Xiaoyan Zhu, who hosted the workshop as the director of the research center on Tsinghua side. Prof. Zhisheng Niu, deputy dean of the School of Information Science and Technology, gave an overview of his school and the university as a whole - affirming Tsinghua's commitment to collaborative research. Related research groups in Tsinghua updated research efforts in their labs and on the collaborative projects. Huw Robson, director of the Media Technologies Lab, and Qian Lin, manager of the Imaging Technologies Department, then spoke of the research being done in the areas they oversee. Qian Lin also served as organizers of the workshop, along with Wei Liu, research programs director at HP Labs China, and Liang Tang, research scientist at HP Labs China. HP UR China project manager Xiangyi Yao served as MC.
Prith Banerjee, the worldwide director of HP Labs, also attended this workshop on his first visit to China. Within the workshop, Prith visited several related labs in Tsinghua and made conversation with each group. He has also given a speech about the future research plans of HP Labs, and the important role Chinese universities will play in those plans.
HP and Tsinghua are committed to collaborative research, and we hope the Tsinghua-HP Multimedia Research Center Workshop would be even greater next year.
